Sapte Seri

The online portal of the leading program guide in Bucharest

The Task

Sapte Seri is our oldest client and their website - sapteseri.ro - is a project that is very near and dear to our hearts. This site has gone through many versions and variations, along the years and is still undergoing rapid development.

We were commissioned to rewrite the Sapte Seri web application, in order to bring it up to date and create a platform for ongoing development, back in 2007. We have been developing the portal, redesigning it and adding new features ever since.

Challenges

There were many roadblocks along the way, development-wise, mainly concerning the very large amounts of information to be stored, processed and displayed.

Because this is an event and place portal, the sheer volume of information that needs to be stored and processed is huge. This, coupled with the high volume of traffic, especially on week-ends and other significant dates,  means that performing live queries on the raw data is very inefficient. The user must not wait for the site to sift through vast amounts of data. Therefore, we had to devise a system of caches and stores in order to make the information readily accessible to the user.

Additionally, the content must be administered by a variety of users from multiple sites, so we had to implement a content management system that is "location aware", allowing users to manipulate information based on credentials and geographical assignment.

The Application

SapteSeri.ro is a vast information portal with content ranging from simple event and place listings to blogging (we use wordpress for this), article publishing and interactive. Here are some of the modules developed for the portal:

Place and event listing - the core of the information provided on the site

Articles - alows for publishing and archinving of the items

Blog - a WordPress base platform, for which we had to create a custom theme, in order to integrate it with the website

Contests platform - admins are able to manage ongoing contests and customize them using a wide variety of parameters

An Interactive Map - using the Yahoo! Maps API, we were ablo to create an interactive map that is a very useful tool in planning one's spare time

The end result is a powerful, high-speed, web platform which servers hundreds of thousands of users on a monthly basis, providing relevant and easy to access information.
